BDSI association surveys reveal German consumers expect sugar within confectionery

Latest studies from Germany’s BDSI confectionery trade association have found that over four out of five people in the nation expect a high sugar content within sweets ranges, writes Neill Barston.

As the study found, consumers in Germany also know that it is in the case that their favoured treats primarily represent occasional indulgence rather than everyday staples.

Furthermore, the BDSI said that the vast majority of respondents appreciate confectionery as products with a high calorie content, which were considered as forming part of an overall balanced diet.

A total of 46% fully agreed with the statement “Sweets contain a lot of sugar”, another 35% largely agreed, 17% of the respondents chose the statement “partly” and 2% opted for “disagree.

The assessments are almost identical for the statement “Lots of people have sweets containing calories” – with 43% fully agreeing, another 36% largely too. 20% of the respondents chose the statement “partly.”. Furthermore, a total of 78% of Germans state that sweets are primarily enjoyable foods.

In addition, the BDSI has been particularly active in recent months in support for the new German legislation which outlines key standards for operating in respecting those throughout value chains, including the cocoa sector.

This comes as it has also highlighted major challenges facing the country’s confectionery industry, with 43% of its member businesses reporting a loss in sales, according to a recent study. Its research found that a total of 76% businesses in the sector had been notably impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, in terms of employee illness. It is not anticipated that trade would recover until 2023.
