Laser-scored bags to enhance convenience

Packaging supplier Wipak UK has developed a range of bags for dry foods that feature a laser-scored opening in response to increasing demand for quick, convenient and easy-to-use packaging.

Wipak UK, which specialises in multilayer and barrier films, created its easy-open feature in a bid to enhance consumer convenience in the dry foods sector. It says that unlike anything else on the market, the laser-scored pinch ‘n’ pull opening significantly increases pack functionality, and has been incorporated into a range of formats, including a Stabilo bag, pillow bag and a quad pack pouch.

“Product development is essential to improving consumer convenience and, in an increasingly competitive market, food manufacturers need to be innovative to stand out on the shelf,” said Wayne Hallsworth, sales manager at Wipak UK.

“In response, we’ve developed a range of packs with a new, user-friendly opening which is safe, convenient and easy to open thanks to our specialist contour laser-scoring technology. The range’s pinch ‘n’ pull opening eliminates the need for scissors, is neat and tidy and, unlike traditional packs which rip and tear when opened, ensures there’s no product spillage.”

Each pack can be resealed using an adhesive label and, as the contents do not need to be decanted into a separate container, the packs can maintain brand identity throughout a product’s lifecycle, Hallsworth added.

Wipak UK uses advanced laser technology to create the opening of the three pack formats, selectively weakening a specific layer of the film, while ensuring that no barrier characteristics are lost in the process. The laser-scored line can be registered to printed designs if required, and all three formats can be run on existing packaging machines.

The packs are suitable for a range of dry snacks, from dry snacks, cereals, oats and pasta, to rice, pulses, nuts, spices, seeds, grains and mixed fruit.
