Tangerine goes down under

The UK’s Tangerine Confectionery has secured a distribution deal with Australian Bulk Foods to supply Barratt Sherbet Fountains and 70,000 cases of Taveners Proper Sweets to Australian retailers.

Geoff Sharp of Australian Bulk Foods notes, “Like the UK, we are seeing a revival of iconic English confectionery in Australia. Many British expats are helping drive sales as they remember the Sherbet Fountain as a childhood favourite. They are introducing their children and grandchildren to the brand and they in turn are becoming new fans of the product.”

Stephen Joseph, executive chairman of Tangerine Confectionery, says the deal is “just the start” of an export push on traditional sweets.

Tangerine relaunched the sweet in April with a new re-sealable plastic tube and all-natural ingredients after buying the brand as part of the acquisition of Cadbury’s private label business Monkhill in early 2008. Sales of Sherbet Fountains rose 20% in volume and 25% by value between last May and November, according to the group.
