A significant confectionery deal has been struck by OV UK, a subsidiary of Orkla Food Ingredients, after it moved to expand its presence in the region through acquiring British-based Premier Chocolate, writes Neill Barston.
The purchase of the firm, located in Shirebrook, near Mansfield, Derbyshire, was for an undisclosed fee, though according to reports, the business presently has a turnover of £3 million annually, and will be integrated into its new owner’s operations.
According to its own records, Premier Chocolate had been established in 2014 by Helgi Gislason, following the acquisition of BBB Dovedale and the subsequent acquisition of Creative Confectionery in 2016.
OV noted, that the business had continued to supply a broad range of industrial customers and retailers, including international brands. The company has established a solid platform with skilled employees, efficient operations and long-standing customer relationships.
As Confectionery Production has reported in recent months, 2026 is seeing a number of acquisitions and amalgamations across confectionery, snacks, and equipment manufacturers at a period of sustained economic challenges around the world.
Regarding its own operations, OV UK has carved a niche in sweet ingredient supplying artisans and industrial customers, with its parent company, Orkla Food Ingredients (“OFI”) delivering ingredients to firms in the bakery, ice cream and plant-based markets, and has a leading position in Europe and a platform for growth in the US. Its core areas include bread and cake improvers and mixes, yeast, marzipan, ice cream ingredients and margarine and butter blends.
Coen Louwerse, CEO of OV UK commented: “We are very pleased to welcome Premier Chocolate to OV UK. The company strengthens our capabilities within seasonal chocolate products and allows us to build scale in an important niche category within our business system,”
“Premier Chocolate has developed into an operationally well-driven business with a strong team and loyal base of customers. I am confident that OV UK is the right owner to continue this journey and further develop the company going forward,” says Helgi Gislason, former owner of Premier Chocolate.
