Staff at Walker’s Shortbread received a surprise visit from tennis ace Andy Murray, who was offered a tour of its Scottish facilities, writes Neill Barston.
The former Wimbledon champion, who now serves as ambassador for the brand, was welcomed by the founding family at the historic Aberlour House, where they shared stories about the company’s heritage.
As the company noted, during his visit, Andy met numerous employees behind the world-famous shortbread, learning about the generations of skill that go in every box. On a guided tour of the factory, he witnessed first-hand how the 128-year-old family recipe is brought to life, seeing how Walker’s blends generations of tradition with modern, large-scale automation.
Andy also spent time with long-serving employees who proudly shared their stories of being part of the Walker’s family, before departing for Elgin to connect with more members of the dedicated Walker’s team.
Nicky Walker, Managing Director at Walker’s Shortbread, said: “We were delighted to welcome Andy to our home in Aberlour. It was a privilege to show him the business and our production operations. It was also fantastic that he took the time to engage with so many members of staff and be available for obligatory photo opportunities.
“Our Speyside factories are where we produce our premium shortbread enjoyed across the globe, and having Andy see this first-hand made the day truly special. We are thoroughly looking forward to continuing our partnership, showcasing Scotland at its finest and celebrating our shared heritage”.
Andy Murray said: “It was great being able to visit the Walker’s factory. I’ve been a partner of Walker’s for a year and a shortbread fan for a lot longer, so to see everything in production and meet the team was really interesting.
“The Walker family hosted me and their passion and knowledge was genuinely inspiring and it was incredible to hear about the business over the past century.”
The visit underscores the partnership of two Scottish icons coming together to showcase ‘Scotland at its Finest’, while highlighting their shared sense of national heritage, pride, and understated charm.
