Ferrero has confirmed that Kinder Surprise products are now back on UK shelves, after they were withdrawn this summer following a salmonella outbreak at its Arlon factory, which has now been resolved, reports Neill Barston.
The Belgian food safety authority (AFSCA) had previously given clearance for the company’s lines to restart following extensive cleaning and food safety controls, with the industry body noting that all required standards had been met.
As part of this: More than 1,000 Ferrero employees worked alongside independent specialists on site to prepare the factory for reopening.
Furthermore, 1,800 quality tests were completed with 10,000 parts dismantled and cleaned. There was also updated product safety protocols, trainings and sampling in the manufacturing plant, and significant investments were made into the factory, including the replacement of multiple pieces of equipment as well as the installation of 300 metres of new pipeline.
The new Kinder Surprise products will all be marked with Best Before Dates starting from 20/04/2023 and will become widely available across retail and independent stores from this week.
Philippe Steyaert, Ferrero UK and Ireland Regional Director, said: “As our Kinder Surprise products start to appear in stores again this summer, we would like to thank the food safety authorities, including the UK Food Standards Agency and the Food Safety Authority Ireland for their support and guidance.
“The trust our consumers place in our products is incredibly important to us all at Ferrero and we promise to do everything we can to rebuild this.”
