The US-based National Confectioners Association has declared that June is National Candy Month, encouraging consumers to go out and enjoy their favourite treats as conditions amid the pandemic begin to improve, writes Neill Barston.

With just weeks before the organisation’s plans for the 2021 Sweets and Snacks Expo are due to be delivered, it has highlighted a number of key seasonal trends for the summer months ahead.

As the association noted, treats including chocolate, candy, gum and mints often play their part in celebrations, and in a year that has been beset by so many challenges, their role is being seen as especially significant this year.

According to the NCA, its top three summer candy flavours are  Strawberry, Watermelon and Cherry, while in the candy stakes, chocolate, gummies and hard candy represent their top-rated picks for the season.

“Whether you’re headed to the beach or to the pool, out for a hike or just to your backyard, chocolate and candy can add some sweetness to the summer,” John Downs, NCA president & CEO, said. “With more retailers joining us in this fun and unique national awareness moment, we are bringing the National Candy Month celebration to more and more people nationwide.”

Most Americans believe that physical health and emotional well-being are connected, and NationalCandyMonth.com can be a great resource for consumers looking to strike the balance between managing their sugar intake and enjoying their favourite treats while having some fun this summer.

Moreover, research from the NCA has found that in the US, 94% of families camping with bring chocolate or candy with them, and a similar amount (93%) will also ensure a treat or two is at hand for a classic American road trip, and 89% of beachgoers enjoy confectionery on their coastal visits.
