Teams at Mondelēz International’s Australian facilities in Scoresby have been marking its 50th anniversary, as it gains key $8million investment towards lollipop technology for core production lines, reports Neill Barston.

As the company noted, the funding will ensure consistent manufacturing of some of its core brands that have gained iconic status, including  Cadbury Pascall Clinkers, Sour Patch Kids, as well as The Natural Confectionery Company.

According to research from the Imarc group, the Australian confectionery market is now worth some $4 billion as of last year, with the region showing wider growth of just under 3%, its comparatively young demographic has proved to be particularly noteworthy for the global industry.

The move supports the overall production of 120 product ranges, including mini-bags, and stands as part of broader $30 million investment since 2022 as a key confectionery manufacturing hub for the region.

Moreover, as the company asserted it will help drive faster innovation across flavours, ranges and packaging, and enables the business to respond to quickly-changing consumer demands, which have increasingly been influenced by social media platforms.

From its own research, it is anticipated that by 2035, the company anticipates that 50 per cent of its growth will come from chocolate and the other 50 per cent will come from non-chocolate products. The business has strong roots in Victoria, where some 1,200 people are employed across South Melbourne. Ringwood, Scoresby, Dandenong South and the new Truganina National Distribution Centre.

Mondelēz International Australia, New Zealand and Japan President Toby Smith felt the Scoresby facility has been an important part of Australia’s manufacturing legacy as well as its future.

He commented: “We are incredibly proud of our 50-year manufacturing legacy at Scoresby and the jobs we have created for hundreds of Victorians in Melbourne’s east over the decades.

“The $8 million new packaging capability is just one part of the $30 million we have invested in Scoresby over the past five years to ensure the facility has a strong future producing iconic treats locally.

“Our continued investment in the Scoresby factory and our team demonstrates our confidence in Australia’s ongoing capacity to manufacture the lollies we know and love right here.”
