When Nestlé made the decision to discontinue Caramac bars last year, UK national media was awash with tales of fans of the classic caramel flavoured bars stockpiling the last remaining supplies, writes Neill Barston.
As Confectionery Production reported at the time, consumers craving their return hit the company with a petition for their return, which has now been granted with a special limited edition revival of the much-cherished choc.
The Caramac bar was originally released to popular acclaim back in 1959, with the name having been settled by a competition – which was originally made by MacKintosh, where it was originally made at the firm’s former facilities in Norwich, which closed back in 1996.
From there, under Nestlé ownership, the brand was produced at the company’s Fawdon facility in Tyneside, UK, where it continued to be considered as a fan favourite.
In its latest form, the new special edition Caramac will be available in a single bar, as well as three-bar multipack and a sharing bag of Caramac buttons, from July 23.
As the company acknowledged, its decision at the end of last year was greeted with concern from shoppers, and the brand says it ‘has listened to shoppers to created a special opportunity for fans to enjoy Caramac for a limited period.’
Lisa Butterworth, Chocolate Classics Brand Manager for Nestlé UK & Ireland, noted that the fan-favourite has earned its slight return given the level of nostalgic affection people have felt for it.
She said: “The calls for the return of Caramac were heard loud and clear, and for this unique bar we wanted to create a special opportunity for fans to enjoy it once more.”
“We hope that this limited release gives people the opportunity to savour and stock up on Caramac as a gesture of our appreciation for the longstanding support of our confectionery fans throughout the years.”
While bidding farewell to Caramac, Nestlé Confectionery continues to innovate and bring exciting new products to the market. The continuous review of product performance allows Nestlé UK & Ireland to focus on new product development.
As the company added, the company has enjoyed a particularly busy year, with a number of new launches this year including the ice cream-inspired Neapolitan flavour Aero Melts, Munchies Cookie Dough and Milkybar Raspberry Ripple pieces, Rowntree’s Randoms Fizzy Cactuz, KitKat Chunky White with Lotus Biscoff and Aero Choco-Hazelnut flavour, adding to its extensive portfolio.
