Support for vanilla farmers

Unilever, its supplier Symrise and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH are partnering to support Madagascan vanilla farmers.

Madagascar produces around 79% of the world’s natural vanilla supply, which Unilever uses as an ingredient in many of its ice cream brands. The partnership will ensure supply for Unilever and support farming communities with improved access to secondary education and training in agricultural best practices.

The programme will operate through farmer field schools to increase vanilla productivity and also to encourage crop diversification. It is hoped that this will enable farmers to earn more money from vanilla, improve their food self-sufficiency and also sell other crops during lean periods.

The integrated education programme will support environmental education in primary schools through training teachers and providing teaching kits. The project aims to establish a learning platform of rural agricultural colleges for vocational training of adolescents.
