Nostalgia has always played a huge part in the confectionery landscape, and there’s no sign that this notion is going anywhere soon.

The latest example can clearly be see with the return of the Wonka brand of chocolate bars, which have sprung up within the UK, and are also set to be released in the US as well.

Their return is indeed no accident – they were originally released via Nestlé, which then sold the rights to its production to Ferrero back in 2018, which made a strong start to marketing the bars, before they were officially retired a few years later amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, that didn’t stop people clamouring for a piece of the Wonka’s magical chocolate appeal, and no sooner had they disappeared from our shelves, than stories started to emerge regarding fake bars appearing in tourist hotspots in London. The situation became somewhat concerning as government health warnings were issued that counterfeit bars may not be produced to proper hygiene standards.

In the wake of this situation, as we have reported Ferrero has returned the fondly-regarded bars are back with us once more after an absence of years, and with an expanded range of products including Oompa Loompa treats for good measure. It’s not just nostalgia thought that the business has tapped into, but as revealed at this year’s Sweets & Snacks Expo, the deal also comes linked to a strong commercial partnership with Netflix, which has grand plans for a new Wonka animated series.

One of the notable features of the new Wonka bars is that (at least in some territories) they’re reportedly including the classic concept of a Golden Ticket that is at the heart of the mythology surrounding its story, with lucky winners being offered the chance to visit the new Netflix House in Las Vegas.

This latest link-up entirely makes sense, and indeed many had anticipated that Ferrero would have in fact revived the famous bars to link with the hit Wonka movie of three years ago, but that opportunity came and went, but the spirit of the book and film will gain new energy with its latest iterations that prove the fact that great confectionery ideas never die, they are merely reimagined for a new generation of fans somewhere down the line.
