As the temperature heats up on centre court at Wimbledon’s famed home of British tennis, Andy Murray was on hand to make the most of his new Walker’s shortbread, serving-up samples to visitors, writes Neill Barston.
Fans were eager to meet the former champion, who seemed in great spirits this week, as the much-anticipated tournament got under way with its early rounds of action.
The meet and greet move at the event’s bustling piazza, was inspired by Andy’s famous cheeky comment about enjoying eating strawberries “with my fingers”, with the duo offering tennis goers the chance to try ‘Andy Murray’s Signature Serve’, a playful reimagining of the summer treat.
Donning a Walker’s baker apron, Murray chatted to fans and asked them for their views on how to eat strawberries – with those answering ‘with my fingers’ securing the chance to taste ‘Andy’s Signature Serve’
Commenting later, the Scottish-born former champion said: “For me, the best way to enjoy strawberries and cream is with my fingers – and I love that Walker’s have created this special treat with their delicious Shortbread fingers inspired by that.
“I like to eat my strawberries whole, the bigger the better. Strawberries with Walker’s Shortbread fingers is a classic serve.”
Combining fresh, whole strawberries with a swirl of cream and Walker’s iconic all-butter shortbread fingers, the serve reinvents the classic staple enjoyed since its first appearance in 1877.
