Freedom Confectionery gains major eco-friendly honours with B Corporation status

British-based group Freedom Confectionery is celebrating a key milestone as it gains coveted B-Corp status for the quality of its sustainability operations across the business, as it continues its international expansion, writes Neill Barston.
As the Lancashire business noted, the move, which sees it join a select number of enterprises around the world committed to making demonstrable environmental performance strides, has heralded a key chapter for the company.
In an exclusive interview with Confectionery Production at this year’s Sweets & Snacks Expo, the business has underlined its commitment to producing its core 14 allergen-free plant based marshmallow lines that place people and inclusive innovation at the centre of its agenda. It successfully offered a distribution platform to fellow UK company Sweetdreams Limited, which showcased its core Choc Nibbles series at the key industry showcase in Indianapolis this month.
The company, which is also Halal Certified, Kosher and PKU Suitable, since 2008, has, as its sales director Elvin Willgrass puts it ‘sought to be an innovator not an imitator,” has looked to make eco-friendly sweet treats that are suitable for all. Now, with B Corp Certification, the business has asserted a unique selling point as it is is believed to be the first in its category to deliver on its goals of meeting dietary, ethical and sustainable production standards.
As the business confirmed, it has gaine a B Corp score of 85, well above the global business average of 50.9, and has been recognised across all five impact areas: Governance, Workers, Community, Environment, and Customers.
Furthermore, as the firm noted, it operates a site powered by green energy, including solar and wind infrastructure, EV charging, and rainwater harvesting — all while championing transparent sourcing and free-from innovation.
