Following swiftly on the heels of a successful Sweets & Snacks Expo in Indianapolis, Indiana, the US National Candy Month is set to offer a spotlight some of the region’s favourite seasonal categories including gummy candy, chocolate, taffy, lollipops, and hard candy, writes Neill Barston.
Summer vacations and weekend trips during the warmer summer months have traditionally offered plenty of occasions for people to share their favourite sweet treats, and this year seems no exception.
This was clearly exhibited at last month’s Sweets & Snacks (watch our exclusive video review of the 2024 event here), where a wide array of new launches were on show from its global base of exhibitors.
Domestically, within the US, the market has proved buoyant, valued at an uprated figure of $48 billion for the past year, despite residual challenges facing the region’s sector as much as international markets concerning supply chains, and ingredients cost rises relating to sugar and cocoa that have impacted retail operations.
However, as last month’s show proved, there was a sense of determination from its 1,000-strong exhibitors – 300 there for the first time, who expressed hope for improved fortunes across sweets and snacks categories.
John Downs, president and CEO of the National Confectioners Association, said: “It’s no coincidence that National Candy Month falls at the start of summer – it’s the perfect time to appreciate all that makes this time of year so enjoyable. As consumers savor the longer nights, warmer temperatures, and relaxed schedules of the season, they will turn once again to chocolate and candy to enhance their favorite summer activities and commemorate cherished traditions.”
Typically in the US, consumers enjoy chocolate and candy 2-3 times per week, averaging just 40 calories and about one teaspoon of added sugar per day, with top treats including gummy candy, chocolate, taffy, lollipops, and hard candy top the list of consumers’ favourite options.
Furthermore, a total of 86% of people going on a road trip will bring along chocolate and candy, 82% will share treats on a family visit, and 68% will hit the beach with their favourites in tow.
Intriguingly, some 78% of campers say they will treat themselves to chocolate and candy – and there’s no better way to end a summer day than around the campfire with s’mores. Of the people who enjoy them, 78% will opt for classic milk or dark chocolate in their s’mores, while 22% prefer more innovative ingredients. As for ice cream, to dress up their cones, consumers say chocolate pieces, chocolate sauce, peanut butter candy, and gummy candy are their preferred toppings.
