Hershey cuts 180 jobs with Brookside plant closure

Confectionery giant The Hershey Company is to close its Brookside Abbotsford plant in Canada by the end of October, with the loss of 180 jobs.

In a statement sent to Confectionery Production, Hershey said it is shifting “the majority” of its Brookside production to its St. Hyacinthe plant in Quebec.

“The remaining production will move to its plant in Robinson, Illinois,” the company noted, adding, “As a result, we will close the Abbotsford plant by the end of October.”

This decision, it explained, was part of a comprehensive review of Hershey’s manufacturing operations to find the most efficient ways to manufacture Brookside products while continuing to meet consumer needs.

“We appreciate the outstanding work and dedication of the Abbotsford employees over the years. Their efforts have contributed to making Brookside an international success. We recognise that this decision will impact employee’s lives and we are dedicated to easing the transition for displaced workers.”

Last month, Hershey expanded its Brookside Fruit & Nut Bar range to include a yogurt flavour, in a bid to increase focus on its snacking profile.
