German-based confectionery group Windel has confirmed a strategic acquisition of Belgian high-end praline business, The Chocolate Family, reports Neill Barston.
The Osnabrück business, which this year marks its 125th anniversary, has continued to gain particular renown for its gifting sweet treats, has continued to steadily expand during its history.
Notably, the business has explored markets around the world, including a memorable appearance at last year’s ISM Middle East event, showcasing its festive calendars, with the company now exporting to a total of 50 countries around the world. It’s combined employee count now includes a total of 800 staff, with a turnover of €250 million.
With its brands ICKX and Pralibel, and as a partner for well-known companies, The Chocolate Family (TCF) stands for a broad and exceptionally high-quality range of classic and innovative Belgian pralines.
It employs more than 200 employees at two locations in Essen and Vichte (both Belgium). The company also operates several Art-of-Chocolate shops in Germany and the Netherlands, with the deal for its acquisition being for an undisclosed sum.
Founded in 1972, The Chocolate Family supplies its products worldwide to both traditional retail stores as well as major retail companies. By joining forces with the Windel Group, new opportunities are established for TCF in order to implement its future-oriented growth strategy.
TCF will closely collaborate with Kim’s Chocolates, which is also part of the Windel Group and one of Belgium’s largest chocolate manufacturers. This partnership will create a one-stop shop for customers seeking Belgian premium chocolates. While TCF has perfected the art of praline production, Kim’s Chocolates focuses on making chocolate bars and tablets.
“The acquisition of TCF is a strategic milestone” explains Fred Windel, CEO of the Windel Group. “With The Chocolate Family, we are expanding our portfolio and bringing together the best of the Belgian chocolate world under the roof of the Windel Group,” noting that the move underlined its continuing international ambitions.
Ellen Huurman, CEO, and Sjaak Huurman, Chief Sales Officer of The Chocolate Family, believed the company would thrive under its new ownership.
She said: “The Windel Group is the ideal partner for us. Their complementary product range and innovative strengths perfectly align with our vision. Together, we can continue to pursue what drives us most: creating as many chocolate smiles as possible, guided by the values we both share.“ The family members Ellen and Sjaak Huurman will continue to lead TCF, as an independent company within the Windel Group.
