Ethically focused impact brand Tony’s Chocolonely has moved to enhance its range in developing its debut filled range of chocolate bars, reports Neill Barston.

As the Dutch-headquartered business explained to our title, the creation of the new series has come in demand for  multi-texture, indulgent treats that offer something out of the ordinary.

Its latest extensions include gooey caramel sea salt crunch,  creamy milk chocolate hazelnut crunch, and creamy milk chocolate ganache

The development of the series follows research cited by the US-based National Confectioners Association that asserted 47% of consumers preferring chocolate with added textures and inclusions, and 65% of consumers turning to chocolate as an affordable treat, Tony’s’ new Filled launch taps into this trend, showcasing how chocolate is increasingly seen as both a sensory experience and a source of everyday indulgence.

Notably, each bar features the company’s signature unequally divided bar design (which demonstrates how the profits in the chocolate industry are unequally divided), just now with layers filled with flavour.

All cocoa beans used by Tony’s, including in the new Filled range, are sourced through Tony’s Open Chain initiative, which uses its 5 Sourcing Principles to enable farmers to earn a living income and build long-term partnerships.

Responsible sourcing approach
As the business noted, cocoa production faces mounting challenges: climate shocks and crop diseases in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire, where 60% of the world’s cocoa is grown, have caused yields to decline. Because of poverty, there has been systematic lack of investment in cocoa farmers and their farms, it also causes child labour and deforestation.

Tony’s Chocolonely has aimed to address this through forging its Open Chain system, which has now been signed up to by a number of European retailers and partners, using its 5 Sourcing Principles to enable farmers to earn a living income and build long-term partnerships. All cocoa beans used by Tony’s, including in the new Filled range, are sourced through this model, ensuring resilience for farmers and premium-quality beans.

As the company concludes, “Responsibly sourcing cocoa isn’t just the right thing to do – it’s the smartest way to protect the future of chocolate. Better farming practices mean better cocoa beans, and better beans mean better tasting chocolate. Ethics and indulgence can go hand in hand.”
