British bakery firm McGhee’s has brewed up a deliciously spooky treat for October, launching its limited-edition Halloween empire biscuits in supermarkets across the region.
The family-owned Glaswegian business’s cult favourite biscuit features two buttery shortcrust layers sandwiched with raspberry conserve, topped with smooth fondant icing and a chocolate skeleton and cobweb design. Vegetarian-friendly and baked to McGhee’s signature recipe, they’re perfect for sharing, scaring and snacking through October.
Available now from selected Scotmid, Sainsbury’s, Iceland, Spar, Morrisons, One-O-One Convenience and local independent stores, McGhee’s Halloween empires have proven to be a hit since their 2021 debut, with volumes almost doubling year on year as new stockists come on board.
This year, McGhee’s Halloween hero will have a new costume, with refreshed packaging and a bold new seasonal design.
The launch follows a landmark year for McGhee’s, which was recently named Scotland’s second most chosen food and drink brand in Worldpanel by Numerator’s Scotland Brand Footprint 2025 report.
The Port Dundas-based bakery is approaching its 90th birthday, with traditional empire biscuits a staple since the business began and a firm favourite once again thanks to a recent surge in demand.
Speaking about the Halloween twist on one of the family-owned bakery’s staples, Aisling McGhee, Commercial Director, said: “Our Halloween empires have become a bit of a tradition for families across Scotland, and it’s something we really look forward to baking each year. There’s something so special about seeing them pop up in shops across the country and knowing they’ll be part of people’s celebrations at home.
“Empire biscuits have always been part of what we do, but their popularity has really taken off in recent years. When we first moved to Port Dundas in 2005 we were only producing around 2,000 a day, and there has been an extraordinary scale-up in production capacity since then.
“The team has had a lot of fun bringing this year’s design to life: the cobwebs and skeletons are a brilliant finishing touch, and it’s amazing to see how much excitement they create every autumn. It’s become one of those products that everyone in the bakery takes real pride in, and we love seeing how quickly they fly off the shelves.”
McGhee’s Halloween empire biscuits are available now in selected Scotmid, Iceland, Spar, Morrisons (Glasgow area) One-O-One Convenience, Sainsbury’s and local independent stores across Scotland.
