Ferrero has issued a product recall after UK health authorities linked potential incidents of salmonella to the company’s popular Kinder Surprise confectionery series manufactured in Belgium, reports Neill Barston.

The firm’s action concerns products dated between 11 July 2022 and 7 October 2022, affecting 20g and 20g multi-pack ranges, with national media reports of 63 cases under investigation within the UK.

Health authorities in France, Ireland the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium are also said to be examining the brand’s lines in their respective countries.

Consequently, the UK’s Food Standards Agency issued a warning to consumers to avoid the Kinder range with the above date ranges in question while studies are ongoing. Investigations were led by UKHSA, Public Health Scotland, Public Health Wales and Public Health Agency Northern Ireland.

The health body said that Ferrero took immediate voluntary action on the product recall as precautionary step. The products thought to be affected have all been manufactured at the same factory, and other confectionery series were initially not though to be impacted.

Recall extension

However, according to the Food Standards Agency investigations, Ferrero has reportedly extended its precautionary recall to cover all products produced in its factory in Arlon, Belgium, listed in the PRIN. These include Kinder Surprise 20g and 20g x 3, Kinder Surprise 100g, Kinder Mini eggs 75g, Kinder Egg Hunt Kit 150g and Kinder Schokobons 200g.

In response to this, Ferrero has taken the precautionary step to undertake a further product recall with immediate effect while investigations continue. Confectionery Production has contacted the business for further comment, but has not of yet received a response.
