World’s largest claimed malic and fumaric acid site for Bartek Ingredients takes shape

Key progress has been made on delivering Bartek Ingredients’ malic and fumaric acid manufacturing facility, which is claimed as the world’s largest of its kind, as the business seeks to double production capacity, writes Neill Barston.

The business, which is headquartered in Stoney Creek, Ontario, Canada, held a ground breaking ceremony for work on the site this January, and it is said to be on track for becoming fully operational by September 2024.

Its latest facilities have a broad base of potential applications right across the food and drink sector, with confectionery being particularly prominent in the mix, with the sourness found with the food-associated malic acid often being blended with sweetening applications, while organic fumaric acids are useful for functional purposes including enhancing taste and improving shelf stability.

Bartek’s CEO, John Burrows said that the business was ‘proud to confirm that we’re progressing as expected. We’re really excited to deliver our expanded capacity by next summer, in addition to new capabilities for a variety of new products.”

As the business noted, it expects the new facility to set a new global benchmark for plant safety, efficiency, and environmental performance. Among its anticipated accomplishments is a doubling of Bartek’s production capacity and a per unit greenhouse gas emissions reduction of more than 80 percent. The company is working with the global engineering firm WSP on the project.

The company now employs 120 people across its two production facilities in Southern Ontario. Bartek’s facilities are registered to the ISO 9001:2015 Standard, and it also holds the BRC Global Standard for Food Safety certification, and it distributes to more than 40 countries around the world. With new ownership in 2019 and significant investments, the firm’s presence in the food and beverage space continues to be bolstered by highly innovative products and services that have engaged in a number of market segments including across confectionery industries.
