Global food ingredients sector heads to Paris
With well over 1,000 exhibitors, Food Ingredients Europe appears set to reveal some intriguing global market trends for this week in Paris.
As far as confectionery is concerned, there are at least over 100 businesses there offering specialist products for our sector, with many opting to release new products that respond to consumer demand for healthier options or novelty segments.
Our parent company Bell Publishing is strongly represented across all its titles at the event, and the business is also exhibiting as well, which offers an excellent opportunity to engage with our readers and colleagues right across the richly varied spectrum of food and drinks markets.
While the pre-event releases we have received have pointed to this being a show offering considerable innovation, there are of course market challenges out there.
Perhaps most notably for the ingredients sector is the ongoing saga of Brexit, which threatens to cast a fairly long shadow over many businesses operating in the sector – most notably in terms of raw ingredients prices.
As the UK’s Food and Drink Federation has observed, should Britain leave the EU without a formal deal in place – which is still hanging in the balance amid a general election next week, then it is likely that ingredients prices will in fact have to be passed on to consumers.
This also raises the prospects of potential shortages of certain ingredients, for which companies have attempted to mitigate against over the past year in terms of stockpiling. However, the expected departure date of October 31 has come and gone, which has left a further state of uncertainty.
Despite such issues, there appears a sense of determination within many of the UK businesses we have contact with to continue trading closely with European friends – who still represent a large volume of their customers.
