A cocoa RDA?

15 August 2012 – A new study by Mars has revealed yet more health benefits of cocoa. This latest piece of research has revealed that regular consumption of dietary cocoa flavanols may improve cognitive function in elderly subjects with early memory decline.

Executive director of the Mars Centre for Cocoa Health Science, Harold Schmitz, says, “Over the past 18 months, our understanding of cocoa flavanols and their benefits has grown considerably due to our ongoing fundamental research focused on linking chemistry with human health. This approach has enabled significant scientific advancements, and may one day lead to meaningful dietary recommendations for cocoa flavanol intake.”

It is particularly interesting concept that in the future there could be recommendations for cocoa flavanol intake and if this was the case this could be extremely beneficial for the industry. However, it would be important to clarify to consumers exactly what types and quantities of chocolate they should be eating, because the current UK preference of milk chocolate, with high amounts of sugar and fat and a low percentage of cocoa solids, will not have the same benefits.
