Kraft buys cocoa direct

8th June 2011 – The South African division of Kraft has announced that it will now pay extra for cocoa beans sourced directly from West African farmers to make its Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolate bar, securing it Fairtrade certification.

The certification will see thousands of West African farmers receive internationally agreed Fairtrade prices for their product and the Fairtrade Premium of US$200 per tonne for investment in the development of their local businesses and communities.

The programme will initially focus on chocolate production at the company’s Port Elizabeth facility. It will include the Cadbury confectionery brands as well as Royal baking products and Kraft biscuit products produced in South Africa.

The Fairtrade certification system ensures better working and living conditions for small scale farmers, farm workers and their communities through fairer prices, better labour conditions, community development and sustainability of the environment.

Having received the internationally recognised certification, Cadbury Dairy Milk slabs featuring the Fairtrade mark will be on shelves in the last quarter of 2011.
