Boiled sweets manufacturer doubles output

24 January 2011 – Traditional boiled sweets manufacturer Joseph Dobson has more than doubled its output, while reducing its energy costs, following the installation of two new air compressors from Thorite.

Joseph Dobson is located in Elland, West Yorkshire and was established in 1850. The originator of the famous “Yorkshire Mixtures” of boiled confectionery, the company has been experiencing increased demand for its entire range of products, leading to a recent factory extension being built.

One of the new compressors is used to provide forced air to a triple linear form, fill & seal line, which packs traditional hard boilings into cast polypropylene bags. The second compressor powers another packing line in the new factory extension, handling newly designed products for the pharmaceutical industry by feeding 10 multi-head weigh, form, fill and seal systems.

Both compressors have enabled Joseph Dobson to increase capacity by over 200%, while reducing man hours by 50%. This increased efficiency has greatly reduced production problems, allowing customer orders to be fulfilled in record time. Potential energy savings have been calculated, which are confidently expected to enable profitability to be increased in both the short and long term.

Speaking of the new compressors Stephen Walshaw, Joseph Dobson’s M.D. said, “During the purchase, installation and commissioning stages we have been very happy –Thorite even took the trouble to provide us with excellent third party suppliers who have assisted us to design and fit special custom made ducting. Even Thorite’s after sales support has been outstanding, with regular courtesy calls to check how things are going and remind us of service intervals.”
