Strong confectionery designs at Pro Carton awards

The 2009 Pro Carton/ECMA Awards saw the highest number of entries in the history of the awards ” 122 entries from 12 countries. This year also saw a new category ” folded boxes with production runs in excess of one million units, the so-called “Volume Market” and a strong display of innovative confectionery creations.

The Carton of the Year’ award went to the Toque du chef’ carton, made for chocolate sweets for Goldkenn by carton producer Cartotecnica Chierese – Groupe Fincarta.

Originally the box structure was conceived as a bottle pack before the packaging was amended to resemble a chef’s hat. “Toque du chef” is round, but can be stored and transported flat. Starting from the initial pack size of 180g, the product range has now been extended to include a further two sizes, all based on the same concept.

The jury felt that the carton was striking in its design and functional in use as it was easy to open and also easy to close after opening. The detail in the creasing added to the shelf impact and the quality of the design both graphical and structural came together.

The winner of the confectionery category was Glanzmann Verpackungen’s carton made for Choco Mundo. The concept targeted chocolate packaging after opening. A corrugated strip retains the wafers (buttons) in the box, keeps them apart from each other and protects them against mechanical damage. This follows a principle which Glanzmann Verpackungen developed for Swiss watch manufacturers for transporting their intricate dials. The corrugated strip also offers ecological benefits.

Wrigley’s 5 gum won the volume market award. The carton envelope features 12 vertical strips of gum and its black colour stands out on the shelf. According to the judges, the use of embossing and high quality print lifted this carton above its competition and a simple yet effective closure device on the reverse added to the usability of this pack. Limmatdruck/Zeiler was the carton producer.
