New carton concept

Chesapeake Creative has developed a new packaging concept, which offers a lighter-weight alternative to the standard bag in carton’ format.

The CartonBag is particularly suited to loose products such as wrapped confectionery, and can be handpacked or fully machine automated. It can also be made using a choice of inner liners depending on its contents to either offer product visibility or an opaque finish.

Janet Shipton, divisional design and development director at Chesapeake Branded Packaging, says, “CartonBag offers the aesthetic feel of a bag and a more environmentally responsible alternative to flexible bags or plastic pouches. Its supporting cartonboard framework can be shaped to complement the pack’s content.”

The manufacturing process includes multi-directional gluing of the plastic bag to the carton.

Originally the carton was developed as a patched bag, but over time it evolved into a bag in a carton skeleton.

The bag can be made from glacine paper, brown paper, films or even cloth to cater for different audiences.

The launch of the CartonBag follows the creation of Chesapeake Creative, a design service that will operate separately from Chesapeake’s site-based design. Creative will continue to work with Chesapeake’s R&D division to develop new finishes and structures.
