All in moderation

With all the hype about cutting down on those things that are bad for our health, such as sugar, salt and fat, there is growing demand for healthier sweets and snacks that still provide that hit of indulgence. However, at this time of year, many of us throw caution to the wind.

According to the results of a national survey from the National Confectioners Association (NCA) in the US, 85 per cent of respondents feel that there is nothing sweeter than sharing a gift of chocolate or candy over Christmas. However, those sharing a sweet treat are embracing moderation when it comes to enjoying chocolate, candy, gum and mints. Nearly 80 per cent of those who took part in the survey report that they have a plan in place to help their children make smart decisions when it comes to enjoying gum drops, candy canes and other seasonal treats. More than three quarters of respondents will include candy in Christmas stockings or gifts, and more than half will decorate their trees or packages with candy canes.

John Downs, president & CEO of the National Confectioners Association, says: “People understand that candy is a treat, and they are choosing to enjoy it in moderation this holiday season and all year long.”

Among all holiday candy selections, 36 per cent of those who took part in the survey said they prefer to find foil wrapped chocolates included as part of a holiday gift and chocolate Santas (46 per cent) are preferred over chocolate snowmen (27 per cent) or coins (27 per cent).

When it comes to that Christmas classic, the candy cane, about 75 per cent of respondents said they strongly prefer peppermint to other flavours. It even turns out that there is a right way to eat a candy cane. More than three quarters of respondents said they start with the straight end. Apparently a traditional candy cane only includes about 55 calories making it a good choice of treat, while still practicing moderation.

So there we have it, moderation is key. We’d love to hear about your favourite sweet and savoury treats… Enjoy!
