A baking revolution

Since the Great British Bake Off was first shown in the UK back in 2010, a baking revolution has slowly but surely made it’s way across the nation.

Sales of flour and other baking ingredients have continued to rise since the series was aired, but what does this mean for manufactured bakery items?

According to a study by Mintel, sales of manufactured cakes actually fall during the GBBO season as many turn their hands to home baking. So what can you do to make your baked offerings more appealing to consumers?
Many of us are pushed for time nowadays, and finding enough free time to make a cake, for example, can be tricky. However, more and more people are somehow finding it and the sound of electric mixers can be heard through many a kitchen window.

As a manufacturer of sweet bakery products or indeed a retailer, there are a few points that you might therefore wish to consider. Do your products have a homemade feel to them? Perhaps they should. The food savvy consumer is not as rare as he or she once was, and for a product to really stand out on the shelves it must have that something special to set it apart from the rest.

Do you source flour from an artisan miller? Do you use free range eggs? Is your packaging too mainstream? Is there something you could do to give your products a more premium feel?

These are all just suggestions, of course, and it may be that you have ideas of your own – we’re certain you do. The point is that in order to coax the time-poor home baker back to the shops you must certainly have an edge.
We’d like to hear from you about how the home baking craze has affected your offering. What have you done to keep your product range fresh?
