Brussels warns of dangerous fake confectionery

The EU rapid alert service for dangerous products has warned of a spate of imports of realistic fake confectionery and sweet desserts which could choke children and visually impaired consumers.

This warning from the RAPEX agency follows the discovery of in Denmark of scented candles made in China, that both look and smell like confectionery.

Although the import by a Danish company has now been voluntarily suspended, they could be available in any member state ” hence the alert. “The product poses a risk of choking because, due to its characteristic form, appearance, colour, size and smell, the product may be mistaken for a foodstuff. This may lead children or visually-disabled persons to put it in their mouth, bite it and swallow pieces, which could entail the risk of asphyxia or obstruction of the digestive tract,” says the agency.

One candle looks like four scoops of chocolate ice cream in a chocolate sauce in a glass bowl. Another candle resembles a chocolate muffin with pink icing and four small sweets on the top. There is a set resembling a box of chocolates. They all smell like chocolate.
