Industry responds to Ebola

As one of the initiators of a broad cocoa industry response to Ebola, Transmar Group has pledged $100,000 to the Caritas’ International Ebola response.

The donation will contribute to Caritas’ response efforts in Liberia through community sensitisation and education for more than 60,000 people, distribution of hygiene material, food support for households being quarantined as well as aid monitoring and advocacy.

West Africa is experiencing the biggest outbreak of Ebola to date, already the cause of thousands of deaths, while devastating fragile healthcare systems and damaging economies across the continent. Acknowledgement of this critical situation has led the Transmar Group to pledge support to fight against the disease.

President of Transmar Group, Peter G Johnson, says: “Our industry has its origin in Africa where the cocoa is grown. Through our partnerships in the region, we experience the pervasive implications of this disease. As human beings we are deeply troubled by this and wish to show our sympathy and help. We believe that the severity of the situation calls for extraordinary actions and for the industry to unite in support to the efforts done to fight Ebola.”

As an expression of this belief, the Transmar Group is encouraging other cocoa industry members to contribute to the cocoa industry response to Ebola that through World Cocoa Foundation allocates funds to either Red Cross International or Caritas International. “We hope that our fellow cocoa partners will welcome this initiative as see it as an opportunity to create greater and more widespread impact as we join forces,” states Johnson.
