Speciality fibre business grows

Tate & Lyle PLC has welcomed local dignitaries, customers, employees and other guests to a ceremony to celebrate the opening of its new polydextrose dietary fibre manufacturing facility in Nantong, Jiangsu Province, China.

On 13 March 2014, Tate & Lyle announced it had signed an agreement to acquire the business and assets of Winway Biotechnology Nantong Co. Ltd, a leading producer of polydextrose fibre, subject to governmental approval. This transaction was completed on 1 August 2014. Tate & Lyle will be investing in the Nantong facility over the next two years to expand capacity and enhance its speciality fibre product offering. Nantong becomes Tate & Lyle’s third polydextrose facility globally, in addition to existing lines in the Netherlands and the US.

Leo Liu, general manager, Greater China for Tate & Lyle’s Speciality Food Ingredients business, says: “The acquisition of Winway and the establishment of a polydextrose manufacturing facility in China provides Tate & Lyle with an excellent platform from which to accelerate the growth of its specialty fibres business in Asia Pacific and to expand its health and wellness offering globally. We are delighted to welcome so many honoured guests to Nantong to celebrate this exciting next step in Tate & Lyle’s expansion of speciality food ingredients and solutions in China”.

Polydextrose is a premium, low calorie bulking agent and dietary fibre. It has a key role in replacing the technical functionality of sugar, providing bulk, body, texture and mouthfeel in reduced calorie, no-added-sugar and/or high fibre foods. A soluble dietary fibre with prebiotic properties, polydextrose helps support gastrointestinal health, is very well tolerated, has a low glycemic/blood glucose response, and is clean tasting and easy to use.
