Hersheys commits to certified cocoa

The best news I have heard in a long while is that Hersheys has promised to use 100% certified cocoa by 2020.

Hershey did not specify which certification scheme eg Rainforest Alliance, Fairtrade or UTZ certified it will apply – if any. But the issued press release did highlight a company announcement made earlier in the year, which stated that Hershey’s Bliss chocolates would be Rainforest Alliance certified by the end of this year. So I’m guessing Rainforest Alliance may be the top runner for this huge order.

Hersheys is the biggest chocolate manufacturer in North America, so its commitment to using 100% certified cocoa will have a huge impact on the industry. Currently, only 5% of the world’s cocoa supply is certified, a figure which desperately needs to increase.
